An Unconscious Mind
St Anne’s Arts & Community Centre is hosting an exhibition of the Paintings of Philip Barnes between Wednesday 27 May and Thursday 4 June 2015 (except Sunday) from 10am to 5pm. The exhibition is entitled ‘An Unconscious Mind’.
The paintings on display contain heads and figures but Philip combines these with images and forms that occurred to him whilst painting. The end result is an enigmatic and varied collection of images which respond to his unconscious mind. He explains “ the paintings are often re-painted many times and are sometimes completely changed. A meaning to the painting, if there is any, starts to materialise and then I eventually reach a point where I leave them alone. They are ultimately personal expressions, almost self-portraits of a particular point in time.”
The paintings have a lot in common with some of the surrealists but, they are accessible to everyone and there is a lot of playfulness in them. They are vibrant and bold and should create a positive impression. The work sits well in the historic architecture of the old chantry chapel and school which is now St Anne’s Arts & community Centre.
Philip will be at the venue full time during the exhibition and is looking forward to meeting visitors, he said “I’m really looking forward to seeing all my work displayed together and in such a perfect setting. I would love to hear visitors views (good or bad) and I have a brand new comments book waiting to be filled.”
Philip discovered art after working in the coal mining industry and as an Operations Director in engineering before deciding to study art in his late 30s. After a Foundation Art course in Halifax and a Fine Art Degree in Leeds, he completed his MA in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art in 2002. He moved to North Devon in 2011 and has often been curious about St Anne’s and thought about how his work would perfectly suit the space.
Come along to meet Philip during the exhibition and talk to him about his work. Entrance is free.
Philip is based in Bishops Nympton, North Devon and can be contacted by e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org or via his website: www.philipbarnesart.co.uk
